Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has stirred debate during the Indian Premier League 2026, criticizing overseas players for what he described as a lack of commitment despite being paid hefty sums by franchises.

Gavaskar’s remarks came amid growing concerns over certain foreign players not fully participating or missing parts of the tournament. He pointed out that franchises invest crores in these players with the expectation of complete involvement, but in several cases, that commitment appears to be missing.

One of the examples highlighted was Cameron Green, who has reportedly not been bowling due to workload management. Gavaskar questioned the value of such players if they are unable to perform as all rounders, especially when teams rely on their dual abilities.

The former India captain also raised concerns about international cricket boards allowing players to participate in the IPL while simultaneously imposing workload restrictions. According to him, this creates an imbalance where franchises pay premium prices but do not receive full contributions on the field.

Gavaskar urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India to take a firm stance on the issue. He suggested that stricter rules or accountability measures may be required to ensure players honor their commitments once signed by franchises.

His comments have reignited discussions around player workload management, franchise expectations, and the growing commercial nature of the IPL. As the tournament continues, the debate over balancing international duties and league commitments is expected to remain in focus.
